Haematology is a branch of medicine that embodies the knowledge of blood cells, bone marrow and lymph nodes in health and disease.

A Haematologist is a medical specialist or doctor who specialises in the interpretation of blood test results, diagnosis, treatment and management of blood disorders or diseases, including the following:

·                Multiple myeloma

·                Leukaemia

·                Lymphoma

·                Anaemia, such as thalassaemia, sickle cell anaemia,

iron deficiency anaemia, and haemolytic anaemia

·                Neutropenia

·                Polycythaemia (excess production of red blood cells)

·                Myelofibrosis (fibrosis of the bone marrow)

·                Platelet and bleeding disorders (such as haemophilia,

idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, Von Willebrand disease)

·               Myelodysplastic syndromes

·               and other blood related disorders or diseases

A Haematologist is also trained in the specialised area of blood transfusion and bone marrow transplantation. Blood diseases vary in severity. Some are minor and do not cause any symptom or problem. However, some are serious and require treatment. Some blood abnormalities are due to factors that are outside the blood system.  Your family doctor may advise you on whether there is a need to see a Haematologist.
